TEAMS

This week, we learned about the five stages of team development: forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning (Abudi, G. 2010).

The first stage, "the 'forming' stage takes place when the team first meets each other" (Abudi, G. 2010, Para. 1).  The second stage, the 'storming' stage, comes into effect "as the team begins to work together...this stage is not avoidable; every team - most especially a new team who has never worked together before - goes through this part of developing as a team. In this stage, the team members compete with each other for status and for acceptance of their ideas" (Abudi, G. 2010, Para. 2). "When the team moves into the 'norming' stage, they are beginning to work more effectively as a team "(Abudi, G. 2010, Para. 3). The 'performing' stage is fourth and that is when the group is focusing on the goals of their team and the last stage, the 'adjorning' stage, is when the project has come to an end.

If I were to consider, the last phase, the adjourning stage when I think about several of the groups that I've been involved with during the cost of my life. There are really no aspects of the groups made that made for the hardest good-bye. Each time, I was glad the projects were over.  Well......Maybe once, when I was working with Jessica Decker in College.  She was such a delight to work with, it was bitter sweet.  Our video assignment was the only thing we shared; we had nothing in common, so when the project ended...in a way....so did our friendship....well our hanging out anyway.  I guess I would have to consider the project I had with her a 'high-performing' group and that is the only one that was the hardest to leave, because there was no frustrations at all, we communicated excellently, and the project ended just as we intended it to.

I imagine that I will adjourn from the group of colleagues that I have formed while working on my master’s degree in this program by simply saying good-bye.  There are several, that I will most likely give my contact information because I feel a connection and would like to work on projects with them in the future.  Other than that, a thank you, and a respectable goodbye would be how I would adjourn. I think adjourning is an essential stage of teamwork because you have to end everything you do properly, to have closure and that is what adjourning is...closure, finishing things the right way "on a good foot"!!!!!  :-)

  1. Hi Banae,

I do think doing school online makes it a bit more easier to adjourn, but it is still necessary. I will no doubt feel that loss of community despite not knowing anyone personally.
